Campus News > FIU Maintaining “Crime Free” Status by.. not catching criminals?
For those of you who missed last Wednesday’s edition of The Beacon (all of you), there was an interesting story about the recent rise in car related thefts on campus. (You can read the article here) In the article, the writer outlines the story of one graduate student who had her car broken into at MMC. The girl was told by the police that they had no intention of catching the criminal because they wanted to maintain FIU’s “crime free” status. That deserves a WTF? Since the start of 2010, FIU has had 92 vehicle related crimes reported… NINETY TWO IN 8 MONTHS. That’s an average of 11 vehicle related crimes a month. I have not personally been affected in this recent crime wave, but I’ve had two fraternity brothers who have been. One had his truck broken into and had his radio stolen, another was the victim of an attempted theft. We literally caught the guys ditching his car on our way back from Wendy’s. Neither of the perpetrators in these cases were caught, by the way. I don’t know about you, but this is all pretty f*cked up. Especially since we all know that FIU police are more concerned with catching people making a rolling stop in front of the Pike house than actually patrolling our campus for safety. When will the campus police stop being d-bags and start doing what they’re paid to do? It seems as if they are more concerned with targeting and profiling actual students that maintaining some sense of safety around our school. Until the crime wave subsides, I suggest everyone parks in well-lit areas. Girls, don’t walk to your cars alone at night. Guys, watch your back. Maybe now that there will be a Dunkin Donuts on campus this fall the police won’t have an excuse to leave school. Until then, keep your eyes open and stay safe.

Ballin’ on a Budget > Bar Deals
FIU doesn’t have the advantage of being located in your typical college town setting unlike our UF or FSU counterparts. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do across the street.
The S Bar and Panthers Sports Bar are located both within a mile from campus, and are always offering deals to students.
